Therefore, I thought I’d like to jot down a few words and reflect upon the experience that Barbara and I had working with you and your firm building our dream house. I remember the day clearly. Design renovations win Community Pride Award

The Sonoma Grill, East Rutherford, has received a Community Pride Award for its architectural and design renovations from the East Rutherford Redevelopment Agency (ERRA). Lillian Sessman, chairwoman of the ERRA, cited the Sonoma Grill’s chef/owner John Foy. “The enhancements you have made to your facility,” she said, “set an example that we hope others will emulate, adding pride and economic benefit to our community.”
Foy is renowned in the region for his four-star dining ventures such as the Tarragon Tree and Le Delice. He accepted his award at an East Rutherford town council meeting, from Sesselmann and East Rutherford Mayor James Plosia.
“I tried to preserve the turn-of-the-century stained glass and tin ceiling in the original section of the building,” he said, “while incorporating a California feel into the newer parts of the building. This was a substantial investment on my part, and a huge risk in this economy, but I believe the dining public appreciates the uniqueness and beauty of Sonoma Grill.” According to Foy, more than $1 million was invested in the property, which formerly housed Caughey’s seafood restaurant for 46 years. The original building that contains the stained glass and tin ceiling is 90 years old. The newer section, with the bar and grill rooms, dates from the 1950s. Foy also thanked Rose Sangiovanni, manager of Sonoma Grill, for her contributions. Architect for the project was Rocco Campanella of Campanella & Ciok, Union City. Micheal Wiener of New York City served as interior designer. C&F Builders, Clinton, performed the renovation.

To anyone looking for an architect,

When my wife and I first sat down with Rocco Campanella, we had some conceptual idea of what we wanted to add to our home, but that’s all. The difficulty came with trying to arrange an addition that included all of our needs, but would also look nice and flow well. We also knew that we wanted a home that would look different than the ordinary house. Rocco met with us several times during the preliminary design phase and worked with us patiently until we came up with a layout that we were please with. We then sent out the preliminary bids to four contractors to get an idea of how much the addition would cost. One of the contractors commented to me that Rocco’s preliminary plans contained more information than what he had received from most architects’ final drawings. We subsequently had Rocco complete final drawings from “soup to nuts” (including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing drawings, and all the finishes and fixtures that we selected). I strongly suggest that anyone considering using an architect call either my wife Andrea, or myself at (201) 325-3057 and come take a look at what we added on to our home.
